Newcastle United’s interest in No.1 goalkeeper target James Trafford is ramping up.
James Trafford jetted to Ibiza from Newcastle airport earlier this week amid speculation linking him with a move to St James’ Park, NewcastleWorld can reveal.
It is no secret that the Magpies are chasing a move for the Burnley goalkeeper. Newcastle were close to landing their man last summer but the deal collapsed after Odysseas Vlachodimos was forced upon them as part of the Elliot Anderson sale.
Trafford was understood to be devastated at the transfer falling through, with personal terms already being agreed. The 22-year-old went on to enjoy a record-breaking campaign at Turf Moor where he registered 29 clean sheets as Scott Parker’s men earned an instant Premier League promotion.
Toon chiefs remain keen on Trafford and have identified him as their top goalkeeper target. The Clarets shot-stopper is viewed as the long-term successor to Nick Pope and a future England No.1.
James Trafford flew from Newcastle to Ibiza
NewcastleWorld can report that Trafford flew to Ibiza from Newcastle airport on Tuesday. One source noted how he took a picture with a young fan but few people recognised him despite ongoing links to the Magpies.
Trafford - born in Cockermouth - attended his sister’s wedding last weekend. It is unclear whether his journey from Newcastle was a mere coincidence or related to the ongoing transfer speculation.
An Instagram story last night showed the former Manchester City youngster living it up on the White Island with Burnley captain Josh Brownhill. Time will tell whether the two remain teammates come the opening day of the Premier League season.
James Trafford on Newcastle United collapse
Speaking on the Fozcast YouTube channel, Trafford opened up about being disheartened at the Newcastle move breaking down 12 months ago. He said: “In the summer I think people knew I wanted to move. The club that I was close to going to (Newcastle), it was a good fit for me. It was brilliant for me and I really believed in it.
“I wanted to move, not just because I didn’t want to play in the Championship, I had no shame playing in the Championship. I have no ego to think I’m better than the Championship. You only prove something by performing and showing people.
It was just when an opportunity and a situation you think suits you can happen, you should take it and you should try and go for it, so I wanted to move. It was close but it didn’t end up happening. The manager was brilliant throughout pre-season.”

‘I was moody - James Trafford
“I wasn’t the best, I was moody because I’m young and I wanted to move, but in the moment I still worked extremely hard,” he added. “I knew the longer it went on, the reality became I would be playing the first game of the season and I wanted to play. I told the manager I was available if he wanted to select me. If not, I’ll sit on the bench, but I’m available. He played me the first game and that was it.”
