Manchester United are in the market for a new striker this summer
Manchester United are in the market for a new striker in the summer transfer window after a miserable 2024-25 campaign in front of goal.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both struggled to consistently find the back of the net as the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League while they missed the chance to qualify for the Champions League by losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
A striker is still required if United want to challenge for European football but with a number of clubs in the market for a number nine, it is proving difficult. Liam Delap, who was the club’s top target for the position, has joined Chelsea while Viktor Gyokeres is said to prefer a move to Arsenal to play Champions League football.
Man Utd offered chance to sign Mehdi Taremi from Inter Milan
During those talks, is it claimed that the Red Devils were offered Mehdi Taremi as part of a potential deal as Inter are keen to offload the Iran international this summer. United rejected the chance to bring the 32-year-old to Old Trafford as they want to sell Hojlund without the inclusion of any player swaps.
Taremi had been linked with United before. That reported interest came back in 2023-24 when Taremi was in the final year of his contract with FC Porto but he instead made the move to the San Siro last summer, penning a three-year deal with Inter.
Taremi came off the bench when Inter knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League in a dramatic semi-final. Clarence Seedorf said of him after his cameo: "I'd like to praise Mehdi Taremi. He was attacking, defending, and he even won one against Lamine Yamal. He really made a difference. Mehdi has been underrated all year at Inter."
Mehdi Taremi has impressive goal record - but Man Utd are right to reject him
Taremi turns 33 next month and despite an impressive goal record, he has had a tough year at Inter. At international level for Iran he has 53 goals in 93 caps along with 24 assists.
He first arrived in Europe with Rio Ave in Portugal in 2019, scoring 21 goals and providing five assists to earn himself a move to Porto. He went on to net 91 times and provide 51 assists in just 182 games. However, with Inter he has scored just three goals in one season, but has been responsible for nine assists.
185 goals involvements at club level since 2019 is not to be sniffed at but with Taremi turning 33 next month and struggling in his first experience in a top-five league, United can’t afford the risk of adding another player to the wage bill who will struggle to meet expectations.
