£68m star now open to joining Man Utd, no longer focused on UCL football - report

Manchester United have been handed a boost in signing one of Europe’s in-form strikers.

The Red Devils have been active during the early phase of the summer transfer window.

They have already purchased Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers to bolster their attack.

Talks are advanced with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo and he is expected to join pretty soon.

Mirror now report that United are back in pole position to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sweden international recently made the choice to join Arsenal amid his preference to play Champions League football.

However, the Gunners are prioritising a deal for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and seem most likely to sign the Slovenian.

Hence, Gyokeres has U-turned on making Arsenal his priority, thereby re-opening the door to reunite with manager Ruben Amorim.

The 27-year-old may still have to play the waiting game as United need to recoup funds first to negotiate his potential transfer.

After the huge outlay on Cunha and Mbeumo, the Red Devils’ future signings could partly depend on funds secured from sales.

Gyokeres could form dream attack alongside Cunha and Mbeumo

The Swede had a sensational 2024/25 campaign with Sporting CP. He scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists from 52 appearances.

Gyokeres also bagged 43 goals and 15 assists from 50 games in 2023/24 and proved that he is not a one-season wonder at Sporting CP.

Despite this, there are some concerns whether he can adapt to the higher intensity of the Premier League.

Gyokeres scored 19 goals from the penalty spot last campaign. He won’t have that luxury at United with Bruno Fernandes being the designated penalty taker.

The Swede did score plenty of goals from open play too, but many were from counter-attacks.

While English football is fast-paced, Gyokeres may not get the same space and time to shoot on goal. He is not the best in the air and relies more on his movement.

We still believe he would be a clear upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. A 25-goal campaign would boost the club’s Champions League push.

He would form a dream frontline alongside Cunha and Mbeumo, who scored 35 league goals between them last campaign. They could play behind the Swede.

Bruno Fernandes looks poised to start regularly in central midfield next term.

United will need to make a huge outlay to land Gyokeres this summer, considering Sporting CP are reluctant to accept anything less than £68m for his transfer.
