Newcastle United are in a strong financial position ahead of the looming June 30 deadline
Jason Tindall, Interim Manager of Newcastle United, shakes hands with Unai Emery, Manager of Aston Villa
As we enter the final days of June, it is panic stations for some Premier League clubs. Just as Newcastle United encountered this time last year, the PSR deadline is looming and some top flight sides still need to sell.
Aston Villa are at the top of said list, with Unai Emery's men paying the price for failing to qualify for the Champions League. Now, after recording losses of £85.4m and £119.6m across the last two seasons, the club need to offload talent in the coming days.
Villa are said to need £30m in player sales to stave off the threat of PSR sanctions, with a host of top talent linked with exits. Jacob Ramsey, a midfielder long admired by Newcastle, has been linked with an exit - and a move to St James' Park - in recent weeks.
This, after Eddie Howe spoke of the Magpies 'taking advantage' of clubs in perilous positions, after themselves losing Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in similar circumstances in June 2024.
"The PSR deadline plays a huge role for clubs - both those clubs with PSR issues and those without - because those without may potentially look to try to sign players," said Howe towards the back end of the season. "They [the owners] will look to take advantage of other clubs, as clubs did to us last year, quite rightly.
"It's a really interesting dynamic and one that we're really aware of and that we'll try to use to our advantage if we can. I can't go into the details of that, but no doubt we've got people at the club who are working very hard behind the scenes on it."
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are said to be considering using a loophole already exploited by Chelsea. The Athletic report Villa have been considering selling their women’s team for the last 18 months.
The decision to sell Chelsea’s women’s team to a sister company for nearly £200m helped the west London club comply with PSR rules of late - while their balance sheet recorded a pre-tax profit of £128.4m for the period of 2023-2024.
The deal remains subject to Premier League approval - along with the sales of two club-owned hotels. The move, should Villa go ahead with it, would likely again raise eyebrows and spark anger among Premier League rivals who have sold key players to stay within PSR limits.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have no such financial issues to deal with this summer and are hopeful of being able to splash the cash in the coming weeks. It is worth keeping an eye out in the coming days, with the June 30 deadline providing the opportunity to take advantage of clubs in financial difficulties.
