Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo this summer.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are close to signing the Bees forward after submitting an improved bid in excess of £60million. The Reds' initial £55m offer was rejected, with Brentford said to be aiming for around £63m.

But the 25-year-old is now expected to join Ruben Amorim's side and according to talkSPORT's Alex Crook, Mbeumo is set to have his medical at M16 next week.

In May, former manager Thomas Frank had previously warned that Mbeumo's sale would need to be for a substantial fee. "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount," he said.

"It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done. There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for."

Mbeumo's arrival at Old Trafford would continue United's recent strategy of signing PremierLeague-proven talent.

The Reds signed Wolves forward Matheus Cunha earlier this month after activating £62.5m release clause in his contract. The Brazilian joined on a five-year contract, with the option of another year.

United return to pre-season training in the week commencing July 7. It is thought that they are hoping to wrap up a deal for Mbeumo before then.

United’s first pre-season game comes in the shape of a clash with Leeds United in Stockholm on July 19. Just days after their trip to Sweden they will jet off to the United States where they will participate in the Premier League Summer Series, facing West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.
