Enzo Maresca gives green light for Chelsea to hijack move for 'exceptional' Man United target - journalist

Chelsea are weighing up making a move for one of Manchester United’s top targets after being given the go-ahead from manager Enzo Maresca.

The Blues have already got one up on the Premier League stalwarts this summer with the signing of striker Liam Delap.

United were seen as favourites for Delap, however Chelsea’s excellent end to the season saw them qualify for the Champions League, and the Englishman commit his future to them.

After making a move to bring in their new goalscorer, one position that Maresca is keen on strengthening is the goalkeeper role.

One shot stopper who looks certain to be on the move this summer is Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup winner’s time at Aston Villa looks set to be coming to an end.

Enzo Maresca asks Chelsea to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa

United have been strongly linked with signing Martinez, however Chelsea may have something to say about that before it is confirmed.

Journalist Christian Martin has claimed that Maresca has asked the club to bring Martinez in to become their number one next season, with assistant manager and former Blues goalkeeper Willy Caballero also giving the seal of approval.

He said: “Chelsea wants Emiliano Martínez as their starting GK, and Enzo Maresca has asked! Willy Caballero has also given the go-ahead. The player wants to stay in England, so it’s an option for Chelsea.”

Maresca fed up of Chelsea goalkeeping drama

The Chelsea boss has been forced to frequently defend his current goalkeepers in the media, after an inconsistent season for whoever was between the sticks.

Internally though, Maresca has lost faith in Robert Sanchez, despite the fact he has remained the number one ahead of Filip Jorgensen.

Sanchez has been told he can leave, while Djordje Petrovic is also set to leave the club despite impressing on loan at Strasbourg.

With Chelsea needing an immediate solution to their goalkeeping woes, there are not many better options out there than the Villa man, who Darren Bent described as ‘exceptional’ earlier this season.
