Liverpool could now sign cut-price forward likened to Kylian Mbappe after bombshell news from France - opinion

Liverpool have already undergone a lot of changes this season, with the Anfield outfit being one of the busiest teams in the transfer window.

The Reds ran away with the Premier League title last season, and although their form dropped off a bit towards the end of the campaign, the fact that the title was already sealed makes up for that.

Although all of the Premier League’s teams have been looking at different options they could explore this summer, it feels like Liverpool have been the team to move quickest for their desired targets.

Indeed, there are still a couple of areas within their squad that could still do with strengthening, but on paper, Arne Slot’s men look ready to retain the title.

One of the main areas that could do with bolstering still is their strikeforce, with a player compared to Kylian Mbappe now potentially available for a cut-rate price.

Georges Mikautadze could be Liverpool’s answer to their striker woes

As mentioned, a new striker is likely to be high on Slot’s list of priorities this summer.

The likes of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were regularly used as number nines, and while they put in a good shift, they’re far better on the wing.

Numerous strikers such as Viktor Gyokeres have been linked with an Anfield switch this season, but one name which hasn’t been mentioned is Georges Mikautadze.

The Georgian striker is only 24 years old, and he still managed to contribute to 28 goals in the 2024-25 season.

The fee to sign a striker of this quality would usually be extortionate, but with Lyon now being relegated to Ligue 2 due to their financial problems, a lot of their star players, such as Mikautadze and Malick Fofana, could be available for cut-rate fees.

This is why Mikautadze could be an ideal target for the Reds, as, due to the amount of money they’ve already spent, a few cheaper deals would be beneficial.

Why Georges Mikautadze would be a good move for Liverpool

Despite the fact that the striker is 24, he’s also Georgian, which would mean that he’d have a friend at Anfield in Giorgi Mamardashvili.

He only joined Lyon last summer after a couple of fairly prolific seasons with Ligue 2 outfit, Metz.

Since then, Mikautadze has blossomed into an even more clinical striker, with the Georgian often outplaying both Fofana and Rayan Cherki when called upon.

As mentioned, multiple Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for him over the last couple of seasons, but now seems like the best chance anyone will have to prise him away anytime soon.

The 2024-25 season of Georges Mikautadze in numbers.

A lot of his goals come from inside the penalty area, but with the amount of chances and space that Liverpool’s wingers create, Mikautadze would be an ideal addition.

Of course, this is all just speculation at the moment, but with the way things seem to be headed at Lyon, the Reds will never have a better chance of bagging themselves a clinical striker for a potentially minimal fee.
