Leicester City have finally parted ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy – over a month after the Premier League season finished.

The Foxes have been expected to move on from Dutchman van Nistelrooy, who was only appointed in November, and have taken their time about it.

Leicester won the Championship in 2024 and are among the teams Birmingham City will compete for promotion to the Premier League with in 2025/26. The two teams will meet at the King Power Stadium on match day four of the Championship season on August 30.

However, while Blues are in good shape and have a highly-rated manager in place in Chris Davies, Leicester will now begin the process of appointing a new boss days out from pre-season.

Leicester’s players are due back at their training base for pre-season next week and they will currently return without a manager.

Van Nistelrooy is the latest Championship departure during the close season after the recent exits of Hull’s Ruben Selles – who has since taken over from Chris Wilder after he was given the boot by Sheffield United – Michael Carrick from Middlesbrough and Marti Cifuentes from Queens Park Rangers.

Davies was only appointed by Blues a year ago but he is the sixth longest-serving boss in the Championship.

Only Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson, Charlton’s Nathan Jones, Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, Portsmouth’s John Mousinho and Danny Rohl have been in place for longer, although there are doubts over the latter’s future at crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.
