'You have to embrace it': Brunskill on coaching from Liverpool to China

When it comes to having a wealth of football knowledge and experience worldwide, Iain Brunskill has it in abundance.

Having started his coaching career within Liverpool's academy, to being part of the Blackburn Rovers backroom staff as they spoiled Sir Alex Ferguson's 70th birthday with a win at Manchester United, before going on to coach in places such as Malta, Jordan, China, Norway and Romania, Neil Lennon's assistant has embraced a variety of different cultures.

The 48-year-old believes it is important to "throw yourself into wherever you are, 100 per cent"- and is keen to build on the "refreshing" early experience he's found in Dunfermline.

When Lennon was brought in to lead the Pars in March, he brought in the man he had by side at both Bolton Wanderers and Rapid București to be part of his coaching team.

The duo then went on to sign two-year contracts in the close season, with West Fife the latest stop in Brunskill's coaching career, which can also boast stints at Norwich City, Blackpool, Queens Park Rangers and The FA for good measure.

Dunfermline Press:

"I think I had 18 months in the Premier League, which was a great experience as first team coach," Brunskill recalled.

"Going to Old Trafford, on Sir Alex's 70th birthday, New Year's Eve and winning. Grant Hanley scored the winner, 3-2, which was a brilliant experience. It was a good time, and after that I've done a few different things really, but all good experiences, taking little bits from everything.

"I went to Jordan. I took the under-23 team, so they call that the Olympic team. Probably three or four of that group are now playing in the national team.

"They've just qualified for the World Cup for the first time, so that was nice. I spoke to a couple of them who've developed really well.

"I was in China on and off for about three years, working first for Shanghai SIPG. I took their reserve team and the manager of Wolves currently, Vitor Pereira, was the head coach and he was really good to deal with.

"I had that, and then I ended up working for the Chinese FA for two or three years with the national teams. A little bit with the technical department as well, so that was a great experience.

"I got stuck over there in Covid. I got stuck over there for 11 months, so I wasn't able to come home.

"I had about a year in Molde as academy manager over there, and then obviously Romania too, so I've had a good experience."

Brunskill continued: "I think you learn from everything. One thing I've learnt is the game's the game.

"Obviously, cultures are different, in different parts of the world, but you're never going to ever change the culture. You have to try and embrace it and try and get the most out of it, and throw yourself into wherever you are, 100 per cent, and, again that's the same here.

"It's a slightly different culture than down south.

"I found it really refreshing last year, the way the players go about their work. There's a real honesty about the players.

"We really enjoyed it and that's something we want to try and build on, embrace and take forward in the new season."
