John Urschel played five seasons in Happy Valley from 2009 to 2013, earning First Team All-Big Ten honors in 2012 and 2013. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent his entire NFL career before retiring in July 2017.

Urschel is more widely known off the field for his contributions in mathematics. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2012 and his master’s degree in 2013. He won the William V. Campbell Award- widely considered the Academic Heisman- in 2013. After retiring from football, he earned his PhD in mathematics from MIT in 2021. In 2023, Urschel joined the MIT faculty as an assistant professor. Since 2013, he has published over 30 papers on mathematics, several of which he published during his football career. Additionally, he served a three-year term on the College Football Playoff selection committee from 2020 to 2022.
