Report: Leeds United try their luck for 'wonderful' star after being left out of Club World Cup squad

Leeds United have eyed a number of wide forwards who are versatile enough to operate as strikers this summer.

The 49ers and Leeds United are stepping up their efforts to add to the squad following a number of players linked to Leeds already. However, not enough of those profiles can help Leeds get up the pitch and out of pressure as attacking outlets.

Versatile wide forward or striker Evann Guessand is one of the attackers on Leeds’ radar. The 23-year-old Ivorian international scored 12 and collected a further eight assists in a terrific campaign for OGC Nice last season.

Guessand was linked with a move to Leeds back in February but recent reports revealed how Wolves led Leeds and others in the Guessand race this summer. A handful of other Premier League clubs have been linked, including Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Spurs.

Leeds join the race for Timothy Weah of Juventus

Leeds and the rest of the competition could now miss out because Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce want Guessand, and the versatile Nice forward could sign for the Turkish club who now lead the race.

Either way, a tall and athletic winger is evidently an area the club are keen to add to. Timothy Weah of Juventus fits the bill for Leeds in that sense and the Whites are reportedly keen on the 25-year-old.

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons is reporting AFC Bournemouth, Everton, and Leeds are understood to be interested in signing Weah after he rejected a move to Nottingham Forest.

The USMNT forward was left out of the Juventus’ Club World Cup squad on Thursday after they had agreed a deal to sell him to Forest.

Brendan Rodgers once hailed Weah as “wonderful” during a loan spell at Celtic. Could a fresh start in England finally see the player live up to his potential?

It looks like a move to the Premier League is on the cards for him this summer, with Weah predominantly occupying a role out wide but also being utilised as a striker or wing-back in some situations.

Dodi Lukebakio could be an alternative to Guessand and Weah for Leeds

Weah and Guessand are sensible options but another player we have suggested is that Leeds should be looking at Dodi Lukebakio this summer.

Lukebakio would be perfect for Leeds’ starting lineup in 2025/26 and Lukebakio is the ideal follow up to Bijol signing for Leeds.

Any of the three make a lot of sense as a powerful outlet and each of them are capable players in transition of making things happen. Weah has a less than impressive goal record, though.

In the last five seasons, Weah has 15 assists and 15 goals in total at club level for Juventus and LOSC Lille. When considering the supporting cast around him, you could argue he should put up better numbers.

That said, Weah has been moved all around the pitch and hasn’t always been a regular starter. Perhaps a switch where he is the main man would do him the world of good this summer.
