After Mbeumo: Man Utd want to sign ‘world-class’ star after Amorim holds direct talks

Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer, according to reports in Portugal.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new shot-stopper to replace £47m ace Andre Onana and are believed to have identified Costa as a potential option.

Amorim is said to have held talks with the Portuguese international back in January and would prefer his arrival at Old Trafford, although Porto’s asking price could pose a challenge.

The one-time Champions League winners reportedly want €50m (£42m) guaranteed plus add-ons for Costa this summer, and are in a strong negotiating position, as the 25-year-old is under contract for another two seasons.

According to journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto, Amorim held talks with Costa in January and has identified him as a potential successor to Onana this summer:

Costa, who rose through the youth ranks at Porto before making his first-team debut in 2019, has been irreplaceable in goal for the past four seasons, making 197 appearances and keeping 83 clean sheets.

The 25-year-old, praised as ‘world-class’, has also been Portugal’s primary choice in goal ever since making his debut in September 2021, with 36 caps and 16 clean sheets to his name.

United announced Matheus Cunha as their first summer signing earlier this month and are believed to be working towards another deal, with Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo expected to join.

The Cameroonian winger will reportedly undergo his Old Trafford medical next week, with the clubs closing in on an agreement worth in excess of £60m.
