Wayne Rooney lined up for shock non-league manager job

Manchester United fans have seen many of their former stars turn to management, but Wayne Rooney’s next move could come as a shock.

After a turbulent spell as Plymouth Argyle boss ended in January, Rooney has remained largely out of the limelight, focusing on punditry roles.

The ex-England and United forward has been a regular face on Amazon Prime, discussing football while the search for his next managerial post continues.

The former striker’s brief time at Plymouth was marked by struggles, with the Pilgrims rooted at the bottom of the Championship when he was dismissed.

His seven-month tenure yielded only five wins in 25 games, ultimately culminating in Plymouth’s relegation to League One despite a late improvement under new boss Miron Muslic.

Rooney’s coaching career has seen ups and downs, having previously managed DC United in the US, Derby County, and Birmingham City before the Devon chapter.

Recent reports from The Sun have linked Wayne Rooney with a move back into management, but this time at a very different level.

National League North side Macclesfield, reborn following the liquidation of Macclesfield Town in 2020, have reportedly targeted the 39-year-old.

Currently, ex-Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage is head coach at Macclesfield and has enjoyed tremendous success, leading the club to promotion from the Northern Premier League last season.

However, the possibility of Savage moving on has put Rooney on the radar for both Macclesfield and Forest Green Rovers.

Should Savage depart, Rooney is seen as a prime candidate to take over.

Macclesfield have been in fine form under Savage, winning 40 of their 51 matches, but the arrival of a big name like Rooney could signal a bold new chapter.

Wayne Rooney remains non-committal about his immediate future, telling media: “Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that’s what I’m doing.

“I’m enjoying it. So, that’s where I’ll be.”

Whether his next step will be back in the dugout or continuing as a pundit remains to be seen, but the Manchester United legend’s journey in football management is far from over.
