One of the most unexpected developments has come in the form of a veteran staying put – a player many had assumed was set for retirement or a coaching role.
Manchester United have now officially reached a full agreement with Tom Heaton over a new deal, keeping the experienced goalkeeper at Old Trafford until June 2026.
Manchester United confirmed the news via the club’s official website.
Speaking about his new contract, Heaton commented: “I am extremely proud to continue to represent Manchester United. As a group, we are all really excited for the season ahead.
“I am ready to support the team in every capacity as we prepare to get back to challenging for the biggest honours.”
Jason Wilcox also heaped praise on the veteran goalkeeper, commenting: “Tom’s leadership and experience are really important for the group so we’re pleased that he will be part of the squad again next season.
“Tom’s mentality and excellent preparation to ensure that he is always ready to perform when called upon makes him the perfect complement to our goalkeeping group.”

The 38-year-old had widely been expected to leave this summer, joining the likes of Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen in departing the club.
While Jonny Evans has opted to retire, and Christian Eriksen is exploring options away from Manchester, Heaton will remain at the club as a reliable squad member.
Tom Heaton initially emerged from United’s academy before leaving in 2010, later enjoying impressive spells at Burnley and Aston Villa.
He returned to Manchester United in 2021, primarily serving as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.
Since his return, he has made just three competitive appearances, the most recent coming in February 2023 during an EFL Cup tie against Nottingham Forest.
Despite limited minutes on the pitch, United clearly value Heaton’s presence and experience in the dressing room, especially amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır.
It remains unclear whether the club will move for another goalkeeper this window, but having Heaton secured gives Amorim some continuity in a key position.
The veteran’s new deal marks another step in Ineos’ methodical approach to rebuilding United for the long term.
