Liverpool have joined Arsenal and Manchester United in race to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Reds Enter the Race for Sporting’s Goal Machine
Liverpool have officially entered the race for Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal and Man United are also tracking the striker.
The striker registered 54 goals in 52 games last season. He has attracted huge attention across Europe. Arsenal have already submitted a bid of €55m plus €10m in add-ons. But, Sporting rejected the offer, holding out for closer to €80m.
According to reports, Liverpool have now approached Sporting to discuss terms. The move comes as the Reds are searching for a replacement for Darwin Nunez. Nunez is now close to joining Napoli.
Liverpool are looking for more options in attack. They want to defend their Premier League title and make a real effort in the UCL.
Gyokeres Still Favors Arsenal but Door Open for Liverpool
Despite Reds’ strong interest, Gyokeres is believed to prefer a move to Arsenal. This comes especially after Manchester United can’t offer European football next season. However, tensions between Sporting and the player’s agent have flared. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has publicly criticised the striker’s camp.
Rumours now suggest the Swede might even consider going on strike to force a move away from the Portuguese club. Sporting have denied any set deal being in place. They won’t be bullied into a sale, despite being open to selling below his €100m release clause.
Arne Slot sees Gyokeres as a powerful, ready-made striker who could make an instant impact. The Nunez deal to Napoli will likely get over the line soon. After that, the Reds could step up talks.
With Arsenal yet to seal the deal, and Man Utd are falling behind in the race. Now, Liverpool might just have the chance to move in and get the striker.
