Manchester United are hopeful of agreeing a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo in time for him to start pre-season with them. United submitted a second bid for Mbeumo, understood to be £55million, with the delay in concluding the deal down to agreeing the add-ons involved.

Brentford are said to want the total deal to potentially reach as much as £63m, more than the £62.5m United paid Wolves for Matheus Cunha. Mbeumo wants to make the move to United, despite his former Brentford boss Thomas Frank being keen on reuniting with him at his new club Tottenham.

Personal terms between United and Mbeumo are understood to have been agreed, with the 25-year-old set to earn around £200,000-a-week. United return for pre-season training on July 7 and boss Ruben Amorim wants Mbeumo on board to start then, along with Cunha, to give them sufficient time to integrate into their new squad.

Mbeumo, who joined Brentford for £5.8m from French side Troyes in 2019, scored 20 goals and provided eight assists last season to help the Bees finish 10th in the Premier League - five places above United.

Having signed Cunha, United identified winger Mbeumo as their next summer signing, with Amorim and the club looking to offload current wide men Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony.

United are also looking to sign a striker to lead their attack, but failed in their pursuit of Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich, while Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres prefers a move to Arsenal, where he can continue to play in the Champions League.

For only the second time in 35 years, United will not play European football next season, after losing the Europa League final to Spurs, who will compete in the Champions League under Frank. It was Frank who urged Brentford to demand a sizeable fee for the French-born Cameroon international after his stellar season for the Bees.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank wants to reunite with Bryan Mbeumo at Tottenham

As quoted by Tipsbladet before joining Tottenham, the former Brentford manager said: "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done.

"There is a reason why he costs X number of million pounds, and we do not have X number of million pounds to buy for. I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don't look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer.

"How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player."
