A University of Wisconsin men’s basketball player has been selected in the NBA Draft for the first time since 2022.
5 lingering questions after Wisconsin sued Miami over football player's departure
John Tonje, the Badgers’ surprise star last season following a transfer from Missouri, was selected with the 23rd pick in the second round (53rd overall) by the Utah Jazz. It’s the culmination of a stunning turn of events over the last year-plus for Tonje, who was limited to just eight games at Missouri due to injury and wasn’t on NBA radars.

Yet the 296th-ranked transfer per 247 Sports quickly emerged as one of the country’s best. He averaged 20.0 points per game, which was the most at any point in his career, spanning four seasons at Colorado State and one at Missouri. He had one of the all-time seasons in Badgers history, climbing to second on the program’s single season-scoring list with 724 points.
What recruits will Wisconsin men's basketball will be scouting at its advanced camp?
His combination of shooting, finishing and creation within the Badgers’ system had him showing up in NBA Draft prospect conversations early last season, and the 6-foot-5 guard had no shortage of big performances to back up that. He had 15 games with at least 20 points, six with at least 30 points and a 41-point performance against Arizona, falling just short of former Badgers forward Frank Kaminsky’s program-best single-game mark of 43 points.
He was named a second-team All-American by The Associated Press, the first AP All-American selection for a Badgers player since Johnny Davis was named a consensus All-American in 2021-22. Davis also was Wisconsin’s last NBA Draft selection. The last shot of Tonje’s Badgers career was a miss right before the buzzer in their NCAA Tournament Round of 32 loss to BYU, but his 37 points willed Wisconsin into that position. That is, partly, the case with the Badgers' entire season, too.

Tonje joined a Badgers roster that was gutted via the transfer portal for the first time, losing star guards AJ Storr and Chucky Hepburn along with five others. Yet next to fellow star guard John Blackwell as well as an experienced core of role players, Tonje led Wisconsin to a 27-win season. He was a Naismith Player of the Year semifinalist, unanimous first team All-Big Ten, the 2024 Greenbrier Tip-Off Tournament MVP, a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week, one-time Lute Olson National Player of the Week and Naismith Player of the Week and two-time Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
While he was a primary option at Wisconsin, his late second-round landing spot likely means he’ll be a role player at the next level. Yet improved defensive ability, good length and 38.8% 3-point shooting mark are a few of several qualities that project well at the next level.
Former Wisconsin men's basketball standout a champion after 1st pro season
The Jazz finished with the league's worst record last season, but drafted two guards — Rutgers guard Ace Bailey and Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. — in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday. Jordan Clarkson, Keyonte George and Isaiah Collier are among the other guards on the Jazz's roster.
Tonje is the 43rd NBA Draft pick in Wisconsin history. Four players in program history have been drafted in the second round previously, and he is the first player to be selected at 53rd overall.
