West Ham have emerged as a potential destination for Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic this summer.

The Serbian international has fallen badly out of favour at Stamford Bridge, and spent the entirety of last season on loan at Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Alphonse Areola has been inconsistent for the Hammers over the years, and with Lukasz Fabianski departing the club this summer, a new shot stopper will surely be needed in E20 ahead of the start of the new campaign.

Petrovic has been outlined as a potential option for West Ham, and the 25-year-old would undoubtedly be a strong addition to Graham Potter’s goalkeeping ranks, although Leeds have also held an interest.

Petrovic has been training with Chelsea’s youth team

West Ham recently saw the door open for them to progress a deal for Petrovic when Chelsea opted to leave him out of their Club World Cup squad.

That decision has seemingly pushed him further towards the exit in West London, and now a development has emerged that will surely spell the end of his time with the Blues.

The gloveman is understood to have been sent to train with the youth team at Chelsea, as a result of his recent attitude towards the club, according to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu via X (27 June).

This rather brutal decision is believed to have left Enzo Maresca desperate to secure a transfer for Petrovic, as he the Italian seemingly wants him as far away from his first-team squad as possible.

Petrovic’s plight should be music to West Ham’s ears, as it provides the perfect opportunity for them to swoop in and seal a deal to bring him across to the other side of the capital.

They have been monitoring the Serbian’s situation carefully over the last few weeks, but there is surely now no barrier to prevent them from completing a deal, if they move quickly.

Petrovic would solve West Ham’s goalkeeping issues

The goalkeeping situation at the London Stadium has become unsettled in recent months, but if the Hammers could secure the signing of Petrovic, then he would surely provide the remedy to those issues.

Petrovic notched 10 clean sheets from 31 games in the French top flight last time out, and was arguably relatively hard done by at Stamford Bridge.

Petrovic played a large chunk of the 2023/24 campaign for West Ham’s London rivals Chelsea, before he fell victim to the relentless turnover of players that has been established at the club.

Petrovic has fairly limited experience in the top European leagues, but he has shown positive signs from the opportunities that he has received.

A move to West Ham would all but guarantee him regular first-team football and would provide him with the perfect chance to prove that he has what it takes to be a number one in the Premier League.
