'He's massive': Darren Bent makes strong case for Giorgi Mamardashvili to be Liverpool's number one next season

Liverpool have had an extremely impressive summer transfer window thus far, with the Reds improving their ranks across the board.

They’ve been one of the busiest teams in the Premier League, with their marquee signing being Florian Wirtz, who was brought in for £116million.

At the moment, it feels like the transfer of Wirtz could be the best move that any team will pull off, with the young German being widely regarded as the best number 10 in the world.

The fact that he’s only 22 years old also plays in his favour as it means there’s plenty of room for him to grow and become even better.

In addition to the arrival of Wirtz, Giorgi Mamardashvili’s move has finally been completed after he was signed last summer.

The Georgian has come in to be the replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher, who chose to jump ship and join Brentford.

And, although Liverpool’s fans may not have seen much of Mamardashvili, there’s no denying that he’s a stellar talent.

Darren Bent believes Giorgi Mamardashvili has enough quality to be Liverpool’s number one

Over the past couple of years, Alisson has been the Reds’ number one with Kelleher getting played in the cup competitions as well as when the Brazilian has been injured.

As mentioned, Mamardashvili is the man who has come in to be his number two, but while speaking live on talkSPORT, Darren Bent gave his thoughts on how good the former Valencia man actually is.

“There’s an argument that either [Alisson and Mamardashvili] could be number one,” Bent said.

“Mamardashvili is incredible, for starters, he’s massive, shot-stopping unbelievable, comes for crosses, good with his feet.”

Andy Goldstein then asked why Mamardashvili has gone to be a number two at Anfield, which Bent responded by saying: “It’s challenging himself, isn’t it.

“He’s got the opportunity to play for Liverpool.”

Liverpool will be a force to be reckoned with next season

Even if Liverpool don’t manage to bring in any more new faces this summer, it still feels like they’ll be the team to beat.

Of course, if the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz are sold by Liverpool this summer, then replacements will have to be sourced.

However, if they end up staying, it feels like Slot’s men would have a good chance of retaining the Premier League title.

Of course, Mohamed Salah won’t be as prolific as he was in the 2024-25 campaign, but that’s where other members of Liverpool’s first-team squad will have to step up and prove their worth.

Cody Gakpo and Diaz were Liverpool’s other best attackers last term, with the duo often being played out of position as a number nine.

However, with the amount of depth they now have among their ranks, it’s hard to see how Liverpool won’t be at the top of the table once again.

That is, unless they get hit by a massive injury crisis, of course.
