Federico Chiesa takes extra steps ahead of Liverpool return as transfer decision beckons

Federico Chiesa remains a hot topic in transfer rumors, with talks of an exit from Liverpool before the window's end already circling.

With only two goals and two assists from 14 appearances in all competitions for the Reds last term, his output was modest. Focusing on Premier League action, Chiesa's initial start came in a late-season match against Brighton – long after Liverpool had claimed the title – supplemented by a handful of substitute appearances which just scraped him a winners' medal.

While many players look to recover during the off-season, Chiesa is doubling down with intensive training to reach peak fitness levels amid speculation over his future.

His sibling, Lorenzo, currently at Serie B club Sampdoria, shared a snap on Instagram showing them training together on an astroturf pitch in anticipation of the 2025/26 season.

Chiesa expressed to La Gazetta dello Sport recently: "My family, my agent and I have a great relationship with Liverpool, and the goal is to be ready for the pre-season. We'll find the best solution for everyone.

"I work every day with a Liverpool programme to be in top shape for the tests on July 8.

"While out of the squad [at Juventus], I was able to train in great condition, but I missed playing friendlies. I had to start from scratch at Liverpool and that held me back.

The arrival of Milos Kerkez is likely to push Chiesa further down the pecking order and he has been heavily linked with a return to Italy this summer.

Napoli and AC Milan are both thought to be keen on the Liverpool star and Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso has urged him to seek a fresh start before the transfer window closes.

"In these days I called 30 or 35 players and I had a chat with all of them," Gattuso said during a recent press conference. "There are players who have been out at the moment because they have very specific characteristics and can give a hand.

"But you have to let the green rectangle speak and when it says that things have been done well, the doors of the national team are open. To Chiesa, for example, I said this: that he must find a way to play with continuity, and this applies to everyone."

Speaking earlier this month, the Italian said: "The year is over, but it's an experience I would do again. When I first came here, they immediately made me feel like part of the team, they supported me during the tough time I had this year.

"I have to thank them all. I am their teammate. I'm one of the boys. Even in training, I tried to give my best."
