Sources: Chelsea now eyeing move to sign "world-class" £128,000-a-week star amid source reveal

Chelsea are eyeing a move to sign Barcelona star Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer should they decide to opt for a more experienced goalkeeper, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.

The Blues are assessing their goalkeeper options this summer after Enzo Maresca used Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen during the 2024/25 season, with the Spaniard regularly being described by the manager as his 'number one'.

But with Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders also joining up with the first-team squad this summer following loan spells away, the club are making plans on what to do with their options during the transfer window.

Blues seriously considering goalkeeper options

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Chelsea were involved in a very public pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan prior to the Club World Cup, but couldn't agree a fee with the Serie A side and a deal collapsed.

But the Blues have not ended their pursuit of a new shot-stopper, with the club seriously considering signing a proven, more experienced man to go between the sticks for the 2025/26 season.

As a result the club are also keeping an eye on Barcelona star ter Stegen's situation at the Camp Nou, after they moved to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol and also handed Wojciech Szczesny a new contract following his excellent performances.

Ter Stegen, who earns £128,000-a-week at Barcelona and has been described as a "world-class" goalkeeper by Lothar Matthaus, missed a large chunk of last season after a serious knee injury and now looks to have lost his place as the number one.

Chelsea are in no rush to do a deal for the 33-year-old, or any other goalkeeper, but they are considering it. That's because they have made a decision on the future of young Belgian stopper Penders.

Chelsea Likely to Loan Penders Out

Belgian seen as a future Stamford Bridge No.1

Penders, who signed from Genk last summer but stayed with the Belgian club on loan, has returned to Stamford Bridge and is currently impressing while with the squad at the Club World Cup.

The 19-year-old is seen by Blues bosses as a future number one at the club, and senior figures insist that will not change even if Chelsea opt to sign a more experienced goalkeeper this summer.

Should that happen, Penders will receive full clarification from the club on his pathway to the first-team, with an acceptance that he will need to be reassured about exactly how he fits in long-term, with Chelsea striving to make their goalkeeper situation as safe as possible.

The expectation currently is that he will go out on loan for next season to gain experience whether a new goalkeeper arrives or not. GMS understands that while they are publicly playing down the push for a new goalkeeper, the situation is ongoing.
