Cooper Flagg was selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks after they secured the top pick thanks to a surprising lottery win. The Duke standout—hailed for his two-way versatility—instantly became the centerpiece of Dallas’ offseason. The Mavs, fresh off a major reshuffle that included trading Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, view Flagg as the cornerstone of their franchise.
Anticipation has been building around how Dallas plans to deploy Flagg. Known for his size, playmaking, and defensive instincts, he possesses the attributes to shift between wing and ball-handler roles. His adaptability aligns with coach Jason Kidd’s vision for a positionless, pace-and-space system, and Summer League is set to be his first real test under NBA competition.

Ahead of the Mavericks' Summer League opener—set to be against the Los Angeles Lakers—Kidd was asked about how he could utilize Flagg, and confirmed his intentions for the rookie sensation.
“I don’t look at the position,” Kidd said. “I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable. … I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens.”
Fans have been reacting to Kidd's decision for Flagg.

"Lakers rent free wow," said another.
"Ofc thinking abt the lakers," one added.
"Yeah I dont think J Kidd will be the next coach of the New York Knicks," said another.
