Roma could bring Leeds United around £2m with new transfer plan emerging - L'Equipe

Leeds United hold a sell-on clause in Charlie Cresswell’s Toulouse contract, and interest from the Serie A is now being reported in the centre-back.

Leeds have a frustrating balancing act to deal with at the moment under the 49ers in wanting to produce academy talent capable of shining in the first team, while also complying with PSR each season.

It meant that Archie Gray and Charlie Cresswell were sold in 2024 before they really had a chance to make a name for themselves, the latter sold to Toulouse for £3.8million.

Leeds United hold 15% sell-on clause in Charlie Cresswell’s Toulouse contract

As reports emerged earlier in June that Como were interested in signing the former Leeds centre-back – since played down – it was also revealed that Leeds hold a clause promising them 15% of any profit that Toulouse make on a future sale of Cresswell.

Having joined for £3.8million, the chance of Leeds making seven figures on Cresswell’s next move is very high, especially if he returns for pre-season boasting a second U21 European Championship winners’ medal.

Cresswell has played every minute so far for Lee Carsley’s side that take on Germany in the final on Saturday evening, boasting towering forward Nick Woltemade.

AS Roma enter the race to sign Charlie Cresswell at €20million asking price

The latest comes from L’Equipe, who report that Roma are the newest side to be interested in signing Cresswell from Toulouse.

Roma are under new management with former Atalanta man Gian Piero Gasperini, and could strengthen at the back by signing the England U21 star, while Toulouse are claimed to want €20million (£17.05million for his exit.

Should Roma agree to that fee, Leeds would stand to gain around £2million from their clause, over half of the original transfer fee.

Smart sell-on clause included in Charlie Cresswell’s contract by Leeds

There can be an argument that Leeds maybe cashed in on Cresswell too soon, but he wanted more playing time and was never going to get a look in over Joe Rodon as a right-sided centre-back.

He needed to leave to progress his career and he’s certainly doing that, but Leeds have done well to ensure they benefit from his future sale.

£2million isn’t a huge deal, but means that Leeds are still getting a reward if Cresswell’s development kicks on away from Elland Road.

In an ideal world, he’d have been kept here and loaned out, but such is the issue with PSR that Leeds saw fit to let him leave permanently.
