'Quite strange': Darren Bent says he's noticed something weird about Liverpool's transfer business this year

Arne Slot defied the odds throughout the 2024-25 campaign with nobody expecting the Dutchman to win Liverpool the Premier League title at the first time of asking.

The only player that Slot brought in last term was Federico Chiesa, and, by the end of the campaign, the attacker was hardly given any playing time.

Not only does this outline how strong of a squad Jurgen Klopp built during his time in charge of Liverpool, but it also shows how adaptable Slot is.

This summer, things have been a little different with Liverpool spending almost £200million on four new players.

The most expensive of the bunch is Florian Wirtz, with the young German breaking Liverpool’s club-record fee after signing for £116million.

However, Darren Bent believes that something strange has happened at Anfield this summer as Klopp was never given the same sort of backing that Slot has received this season.

Darren Bent thinks that it’s strange Jurgen Klopp wasn’t given as much backing as Arne Slot

Speaking live on talkSPORT, Andy Goldstein and Bent were talking about Liverpool’s transfer business after the signing of Milos Kerkez was finalised.

“They make me nervous, Liverpool, fair play, Arne Slot came in and did a wonderful job by doing very little but he changed one or two bits and bobs,” Bent said.

Bent was then asked by Goldstein why Klopp didn’t get the same backing, to which he replied: “I don’t know, it’s quite strange, maybe it was building up to this point.

“Maybe if Klopp were still there, he might have got this big chunk of cash [to spend].”

Two other players Liverpool could look at bringing to Anfield this summer

As mentioned, there are still a couple of different areas within Slot’s squad that could do with strengthening.

However, before any new players are brought in, some will have to be sold so that the Reds can recoup some of the money they’ve spent.

Two players who consistently cropped up as potential targets are Marc Guehi and Hugo Ekitike.

Both players fill positions that Liverpool need to improve upon; however, both will cost a hefty chunk of change.

Eintracht Frankfurt are wanting around £85million for Ekitike while Crystal Palace are looking for around the £40million mark for Guehi.

And, seeing as though Guehi’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, that fee still seems a little steep.

However, if the Reds can earn enough money to pull off a move for one or both of these players, they’ll be even scarier to face than what they already are.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what Liverpool’s squad will look like in their first game of the 2025-26 season against Bournemouth, but one thing is for sure: they’re already the team to beat.
