Seamus Coleman signs Everton contract extension

Seamus Coleman has signed a new one-year deal with Everton.

The 36-year-old County Donegal native will now lead the Toffees into a new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

As club captain, Coleman’s presence has been an important one at Goodison Park on and off the pitch for many years, but especially in recent times as Everton narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship amid financial troubles.

Under the stewardship of the Friedkin Group, the club is now looking forward, with David Moyes tasked with leading the squad as they sail into uncharted waters away from the spiritual home of every Evertonian.

Seamus Coleman’s influence on the pitch may be waning, but Moyes’s belief in the player and person as a figurehead has ensured that he will extend his career on Merseyside into a 17th season.

It was Moyes who signed Coleman in January 2009, with the £60,000 fee proving to be very shrewd business, to say the least.

428 appearances (in all competitions) later, with a club-record 369 games played in the Premier League, Seamus Coleman’s Everton legacy is already secure, but this latest update means another chapter is still to be written.

More than just a player at Everton

“I love Everton so to continue playing for this special club means everything to me and my family,” he told the club website.

“Like every one of our passionate fans, I’ve lived and breathed what has been a difficult past few years for the club and have put my heart and soul into doing all I can to help us get through it.

“Thanks to the hard work of many people, we’ve been able to get into our magnificent new stadium and pave the way for a brighter future under ambitious new owners, which I want to be part of.”

In a frustrating 2024/25 campaign, the 72-times capped Ireland defender was limited to just seven appearances for his club, including a curtailed final day appearance at Goodison. He will be aiming to be available for more games next season, but his manager reflected on how his influence extends far beyond the pitch.

Moyes stated: “Seamus is more than just a player at Everton. He offers so many different qualities. His leadership, his professionalism and his humanity are second to none.

“This could be a period of real change at the club and I want somebody who can help deliver the messages of what it means to be an Everton footballer. Seamus has always done that and I know he will continue to do so as we move into a new era.”

Coleman’s international future could also be extended after Ireland bossHeimir Hallgrimsson opened the door for the veteran to be involved in the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

For club and country, Seamus Coleman is still an important figure, in demand.
