Liverpool brace for shock £50m bid from Chelsea as Man Utd eye move for proven performer

The biggest new Premier League transfer rumours - with news from Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Aston Villa and more.

Liverpool have more than a little busy in the transfer market this summer – but a potential move that we didn’t expect headlines our latest round-up of the biggest new Premier League transfer rumours.

According to TeamTalk, Chelsea are “showing shock interest” in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, who has failed to nail down a starting place under Arne Slot but who has recently starred in England’s run to the final of the European Under-21 Championship, scoring two fine goals in the semi-final against the Netherlands.

Apparently, Chelsea are “on alert” for the chance to make a bid for the versatile winger-turned-midfielder, and “could launch a move” over the coming weeks. It’s suggested that their interest could hinge on whether they find a buyer for Noni Madueke.

It’s said that Liverpool would want £50m for Elliott, with Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund all interest in a deal as well, among several other sides. Apparently it’s Brighton who are most keen on signing the 22-year-old.

The 3AM Verdict: The £50m price tag will put off quite a few clubs, we imagine, and whether or not Liverpool lower that is likely key to whether a deal can be arranged for a player who may well want more first-team minutes next season. As for Chelsea’s freshly-alleged interest, we haven’t seen it from a source we’d trust implicitly as yet, so we’re maintaining healthy scepticism, but he’s young and expensive, so he certainly fits the Blues’ modus operandi in the transfer market.

Manchester United ‘watching’ former Fulham star

Over to Caught Offside, now, who have dredged up an old rumour which suggests that Manchester United might make a move for former Fulham midfielder João Palhinha, who has struggled to impress since signing for Bayern Munich in 2024.

Although no formal approach has been made, United are one of “several Premier League clubs” said to be “maintaining a watching brief” on a player who cost Bayern over £40m when he moved last summer.

Apparently, Bayern accept that they won’t get their money back and are prepared to let him leave for €30-35m (about £25-29m). The biggest barrier to a deal may be the player himself, however, who is apparently keen to stay and establish himself at Bayern and has already dismissed the idea of heading back to Craven Cottage.

The 3AM Verdict: The detail in this article makes us think that Manchester United are actively unlikely to make a move for Palhinha, between the player’s preferences and a claim that Bayern are struggling to find a buyer. If United don’t get the midfielders they need by the end of the window, perhaps it’s an idea they’ll start to take seriously, but we’d be mildly surprised if Palhinha was high up on their shortlist based on what we’re hearing and seeing.

Aston Villa, Fulham & Nottingham Forest all after €25m man

To finish up our latest round-up of rumours, we’ll hand over to Sport Witness, who combine new reports from Brazil and Portugal to bring us news of an impending transfer battle over Porto winger Pepê.

Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and newly-promoted Burnley are all said to have “received encouragement” in their pursuit of the 28-year-old, who has two caps for Brazil and can also operate as a wing-back.

Clubs from Spain have also been “in contact” with Porto about the possibility of a move, with the Portuguese club said to want €25m (£21m) despite the fact that his release clause is three times that. A relatively poor 2024/25 season, at least by his standards, may explain that.

The 3AM Verdict: Versatile and a pretty respectable threat in and around the final third, we can see why a few teams would be interested in exploring a cut-price deal, but he did struggle a little over the past year. This is the first time we’re hearing about the various Premier League teams’ interest in him, but it sounds like any bids are the early exploratory stages for now. Too early to tell what might happen.
