Manchester United are closing in on a move for Bryan Mbeumo, with the Red Devils still in contact with Brentford over the move.

From the start Brentford have been clear that they see United’s pursuit of Mbeumo very similar to their pursuit of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers which has recently completed.

Both players operate in the second striker or attacking midfield roles, being able to step into the solo striker position or out wider if needed.

As such, the duo are likely to be joining Ruben Amorim’s attacking trio sat behind a striker who United are still in the market for.

However, the pursuit of Cunha was slightly simpler due to the attacker having a release clause in play.

This meant that United could bypass negotiating a fee with Wolves, and instead concentrate on how the fee would be paid.

The clubs agreed on a payment plan for the £62.5 million to be paid in three instalments of £20.85 million over two and a half years.

This agreement was put in place to support United by spreading out the financial burden of the purchase at a time when The Red Devils’ purse strings are feeling it most.

However, this won’t be an option for United with Brentford.

The Times has reported that The Bees are looking for a large portion of the Mbeumo fee to be paid up front for the deal to be signed off.

It was already known that Brentford were setting a price tag on Bryan Mbeumo comparable to Cunha’s, so it came as no surprise when United’s initial bid of £55 million comprising of a £45 million fee plus £10 million in add-ons, was rejected.

However, there are still conversations taking place regarding the second bid United fielded with new reports claiming it stood at £62.5 million, with the base fee being £55 million and £7.5 million in add-ons, to match the fee paid for Cunha.
