LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal said he wants to be "heavily, heavily involved" in a potential NBA expansion team in Las Vegas.
O'Neal spoke about the potential for expansion while attending a groundbreaking event organized by his charitable foundation Friday.
"Love Vegas, love this city," the Basketball Hall of Famer told reporters. "This city can definitely support an NBA team."
He said he was contacting "all the top people," but everyone, including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, has kept mum.
"I want to be heavily involved if it's here," O'Neal said. "Like heavily, heavily involved."
He stopped short of saying he wanted to be an owner, joking that his mother never liked to see him flaunt his wealth.
"I don't want to get edited like I'm arrogant, because my mother's watching, remember," he said. "So I always have to be politically correct. I would like to be heavily involved."
Las Vegas and Seattle are often mentioned as potential NBA expansion cities if the league wants to grow to 32 teams.
Silver told reporters he expected owners gathered at a league meeting next month to "give direction to me and my colleagues at the league office" to continue exploring expansion.
