Rockies mocked to keep the Holliday tradition going in Denver

With the NBA Draft now in the rearview mirror and the NHL Draft at the plate, the MLB Draft has quietly stepped into the on-deck circle, set to get underway on July 13. The Colorado Rockies hold on to the No. 4 overall pick, despite going into the lottery with the best odds to get the top slot, just another sign of how the Rockies’ luck has turned out this decade.

In the MLB’s latest mock draft, the team who inhabits the best bar in Denver was projected to take Ethan Holliday, son of former Rockie Matt Holliday, the best hitter on the 2007 team that won the NL Pennant.

Holliday, 18, was born the same year that the Rockies made that miracle run to the World Series. He is rated as the top overall prospect according to the MLB’s rankings, and thought of as a better player than his brother Jackson, who was selected with the top overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.

The 6-foot-4 shortstop was named as the Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year is committed to Oklahoma State to play his college ball. He’s a left-handed batter and a right-handed fielder. In 118 plate appearances in his senior year of high school, he slashed .617/.737/1.309 with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs, numbers that are almost unfathomable.

As Holliday gets older, he’s projected to slide over to third base, as that position will fit his body more when he builds his frame up. While he’s a great shortstop as of now, he’s not the fastest guy on the diamond, and when he adds more weight to his already big frame, it will only cause him to lose a step. If the Rockies end up trading Ryan McMahon away at the dead line, as he’s one of the best third basemen on the trade market, it could leave an opening for Holliday to slot into when he’s ready in a few years.

Colorado missed out on the chance to take Jackson back in 2022, but should now have another chance to keep the family tradition going if the Washington Nationals opt to select a pitcher with the top picks instead of the youngest Holliday.
