Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has suggested there are six teams who could win the Premier League this season after Newcastle United 'dominated' the Reds in the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy following a 2-1 victory against Liverpool back in March.
Federico Chiesa's late goal set up a tense finale, but Newcastle limited Liverpool to just two measly shots on target at Wembley and the Magpies even won 17 more duels than the holders. No wonder Liverpool had no complaints at full-time.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was among those who personally congratulated the winners while boss Arne Slot even sportingly waited behind to shake the hand of every Newcastle player as they climbed the steps to lift the cup after recognising that his side had been 'outplayed in their style'.
Several months have passed, but the manner of Newcastle's performance left its mark on Werner as the American looked ahead to the new campaign.
"When Newcastle played us in the Carabao Cup, they dominated us and there are five or six teams that could actually be champions next year," he told our sister title, the Liverpool Echo. "But we hope that we're the one that is hoisting it aloft next May."
It is certainly going to be a challenge for Newcastle to keep apace with the champions and those sides at the very top in a PSR world.
Liverpool, who bring in nearly twice as much in revenue than Newcastle, have already signed Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerez and Jeremie Frimpong while Giorgi Mamardashvili is also on his way to Anfield.
Newcastle, in contrast, have made a quiet start to the window, but captain Bruno Guimaraes has never disguised his ambition to one day challenge for the title with the Magpies.
"I would love to win the Premier League," the Brazilian international told Sky Sports last month.
"Liverpool are at the top and we beat them, but we know that the league is so complex.
"Many things can happen. There is never an easy game, but I believe that we can do it someday."
Featuring stunning photography, reaction from players, staff and fans, and a fantastic double-sided poster, this must-have souvenir is the perfect way to re-live an unforgettable moment in Newcastle United’s history.
