Newcastle United told bargain £20m fee that would save millions after Anthony Elanga snub

The Magpies have been looking at other options with Belgium star Johan Bakayoko put to Eddie Howe once again

Newcastle United have been linked with Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven.

Newcastle United have been urged to make their move for Johan Bakayoko as Nottingham Forest play hardball on Anthony Elanga.

The Belgium winger has just one year left on his contract and Chronicle Live has been told from sources in Holland that this is the time to strike to win his services. Bakayoko was looked at intensively by Newcastle in previous windows but is now into the final year of his contract.

And while Bakayoko did win the Dutch title with PSV Eindhoven last time, close observers of the star say he only showed flashes of his talent in what was deemed a disappointing season overall.

Bakayoko scored nine goals and made one assist in the Eredivisie last term. He has one year left on his contract and is believed to be available for a knockdown price.

Bakayoko remains on Newcastle's list but they have rivalry from AFC Bournemouth who have also enquired about his services. Dutch sources also told us that Marseille, Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund have also trailed the wide man.

A fee of £20million has been mooted on the agent circuit and he would fit into Newcastle's wage structure comfortably enough.

Given an offer for Elanga was thrown out at £45m, Newcastle don't need to be told that the money for the flying PSV star could be classed as a bargain fee.

"When asked about his future and the prospect of a move, he said last season: "If I were to leave Eindhoven, it would only be to a club that plays for the prizes just like PSV.

"And win the Champions League. I have the qualities for that. I'm ready for the top."
