Man Utd should avoid competing for some big name strikers and sign one with a bargain release clause instead.

Manchester United were once the envy of the world when it came to the strikers that they had available to them.

Sir Alex Ferguson built a quartet of some of Europe’s best goalscorers and still managed to keep them happy even when they weren’t playing.

That Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have started as a pairing for most teams across the continent only further highlights just how far United have fallen in terms of quality in the forward line.

Whilst Sir Alex had four top class strikers to choose from, Ruben Amorim isn’t quite as lucky which is why he wants Viktor Gyokeres and has been linked with players like Hugo Ekitike too.

Man Utd should make bargain swoop for Thierno Barry and hijack Everton talks

Thierno Barry stands at 6ft 4inches tall and has been banging goals in for Villarreal since the Spaniards paid £12m for his services only last summer. They stand to treble their money and yet it still would be a steal for anyone who pays up.

The France Under-21 international had a goal contribution every two games in his debut season as a senior professional with Basel and has gone from strength to strength since. It could have been a step too far in La Liga, instead, his game has gone to the next level.

United need a striker, and Barry wouldn’t break the bank whilst also having the pedigree that suggests that he is only going to get better.

Villarreal chief gives United hope of making transfer swoop

Despite reports that a move to Everton could be close, the perfect source has suggested otherwise, opening the door for United to swoop. Via Futbol Fantasy, Villarreal boss Marcelino Garcia Toral was asked about Everton’s interest in Barry.

“We’re always concerned about the departure of important players, like we were talking about Alex earlier,” Marcelino admitted. “I don’t know what the situation is with Barry, if his departure is close; the last information I had wasn’t as likely to happen. But anyway, if that happens, just like with Alex, we’ll have to find a solution.

“He’s a young player, who wasn’t well-known here, but who has gone from strength to strength, who has contributed a lot to us, both in terms of numbers and in terms of what he means to our team and what he affects our opponents.”
