Former BBC Sport editor brilliantly shares what Rafa Benitez once accidentally text him about Freddie Woodman

Freddie Woodman is the fifth player to arrive at Liverpool this summer.

The goalkeeper has been brought in to be the Reds’ third-choice goalkeeper after Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Woodman has spent the last couple of seasons as Preston North End’s first-choice, but after he didn’t renew his contract, Liverpool swooped in to sign him on a free transfer.

And, while the Englishman won’t likely have much of a part to play in the Anfield outfit’s successes over the next couple of years, his signing is certainly a smart one.

Rafa Benitez sent a text to a BBC reporter asking him to bring Freddie Woodman back by mistake

Woodman has been around the block over the last few years, with the ‘keeper starting his career with Newcastle.

During his time with the Magpies, he was sent out on loan to many different teams and seemingly impressed the current manager at the time, Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard was in charge of the club for a couple of years, and instead of messaging his youth coach, called Simon, he accidentally sent a message to BBC reporter, Simon Clancy, who shared the story via his personal X account.

The texts read as follows: “Hi Simon, we need to bring back Woodman. Thanks, Rafa.”

To which Clancy replied: “Hello Rafa, as nice as it was to hear from you, I think this was meant for a different Simon. Very best wishes, Simon at the BBC.”

Rafa then responded: “Ok, thank you.”

Liverpool still have some transfer business to do this summer

Although Liverpool have already added five new players to their ranks, there are still a couple of areas within their squad that could do with an upgrade.

One of their main problem areas at the moment is their striker.

At the moment, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both seem to be on their way out of Anfield, which would leave Arne Slot somewhat light up top.

Of course, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo will still be available, but over the course of a Premier League season, at least two players are needed per position.

Now that Liverpool have sorted out their goalkeeper and back four, their next priority will likely be a new number nine.

Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres seem to be the most likely moves at the moment, but it’s anyone’s guess who could end up being a part of Liverpool’s first-team squad in the 2025-26 season.

Only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, Slot needs to focus on shipping out some players to build his piggy bank back up.
