Why £45m transfer snub could be good news for Manchester United

Manchester United are slowly but surely starting to change their approach to the transfer market.

The club are desperate to make the ' tax' a thing of the past, but their problems haven't been limited to buying players for the right price.

Selling players for the right price has also been an issue, but United are looking to adopt a strategy that has brought a number of their rivals success in recent years. Adding sell-on clauses to deals means the financial boost that comes with selling a player can extend beyond the initial payment received.

Teams like Manchester City have made millions from sell-on clauses in recent seasons, and United are looking to follow suit.

It's a ploy that could be set to hand them a timely boost this summer, with former United left-back Alvaro Fernandez rumoured to be on Real Madrid's wishlist. United included a sell-on clause in the deal that saw Fernandez leave Old Trafford for Benfica in 2024, meaning any move he makes this summer will add to the United kitty.

Anthony Elanga is another former United player who could be set to switch clubs this summer. Newcastle United are hoping to lure the Sweden international to St James' Park, and the eye-watering fees being reported mean United could be set for a substantial windfall thanks to their sell-on clause.

Nottingham Forest are said to have rejected a £45million offer, with £60m reportedly set to be enough to prise him away from the City Ground.

If the two teams can thrash out a deal then Forest will seemingly bank in excess of £45m. But not all of that will be added to their bank account.

If a move does materialise, the more Forest can get for Elanga, the better it will be for United.
