Ghanaian international midfielder Thomas Partey appears to be on the verge of departing Arsenal as his contract expires on June 30th, with Turkish giants Fenerbahce reportedly stepping up their pursuit. Despite months of negotiations, no extension has been agreed upon, paving the way for the 32-year-old to leave the Emirates on a free transfer.

Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho, has reportedly initiated formal discussions to secure Partey’s services.

Turkiye Gazetesi reports that Fenerbahce’s sporting director, Devin Ozek, is currently in the UK to hold talks, with Mourinho said to be a strong advocate for the midfielder’s arrival.

Partey’s availability as a free agent is believed to be a significant factor simplifying negotiations for the Turkish club, who are actively looking to bolster their midfield with experienced players. Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi is also reportedly on their shortlist, but Partey is understood to be the preferred option.

A Mixed Tenure in North London

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and has since made 149 appearances across four seasons. While his time in North London was often punctuated by injuries, when fit, he demonstrated his ability to provide balance and authority in Mikel Arteta’s midfield. Last season, he featured 52 times in all competitions as Arsenal challenged for the Premier League title and progressed deep into the Champions League.

Despite his contributions, Arsenal seems to be preparing for a midfield overhaul. The Gunners are reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who is widely seen as Partey’s likely replacement. Other midfielders, including Lucien Agoume of Sevilla and Christian Norgaard of Brentford, are also believed to be under consideration.

The Road Ahead

Partey’s departure would bring an end to a tenure marked by flashes of brilliance and periods of frustration due to injury and inconsistency. However, he is not short of suitors, with interest also reported from Galatasaray, Barcelona, and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

As talks with Fenerbahce accelerate, and with Jose Mourinho’s personal involvement, the Turkish club appears to be in the pole position to secure the experienced midfielder’s signature. His move would signify a significant step in Fenerbahce’s ambition to reshape their squad under their new manager.
