Newcastle set to sign Burnley’s James Trafford – Major update on Saturday

A significant update has arrived on Saturday afternoon regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of James Trafford.

On Thursday, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards revealed that Newcastle had launched a £25m offer plus add-ons for the Burnley stopper.

That night, The Times’ Martin Hardy then said this initial bid had been turned down by the newly promoted side, but it appears a breakthrough is now imminent.

In a post on X this afternoon, Edwards has now declared: ‘Hearing James Trafford to Newcastle is pretty much done.’

No details have emerged on the potential fee – previous reports suggested it could take at least £30m – but Edwards’ update leads us to believe Newcastle have upped their initial offer and reached a compromise with the Clarets.

The Telegraph have already reported that there is a ‘gentleman’s agreement in place’ that allows Trafford to leave should a suitable fee be offered for the 22-year-old England talent.

Personal terms have already been agreed, as Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier this week, and the player has already made his feelings clear on a potential move, telling the Fozcast that he was eager to sign at St James’ Park last summer only for a deal to break down.

12 months on, it seems the club have finally gone one step further, especially now Burnley have just brought in German Under-20 international Alex Weiss from Bundesliga 2 side Karlsruhe SC.

Nick Pope may have also given the game away last night, posting a ‘see you soon’ message to the former Man City graduate on Instagram.
