Darren Fletcher joined football director John Murtough in March 2021 after being promoted to the executive position.

The Scot had played for United for over 20 years, making over 300 games and taking home five Premier League championships.

Between 2000 and 2015, the 41-year-old played for Old Trafford for 15 years.

He won 15 trophies during that time, including the Champions League and five Premier League titles, and scored 24 goals from midfield in 342 games.

However, Fletcher’s future has been questioned ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became United’s new controlling co-owner.

In April, Jason Wilcox was named technical director; his predecessor was not mentioned.

Fletcher was then shifted from his previous technical director job to a role as a first-team coach.

He has since served as a technical coach, acting as a link between the first team and academy.

And now, CentreDevils can exclusively reveal that he is the leading candidate for a new role.

CentreDevils can exclusively reveal that Darren Fletcher is the current frontrunner for Manchester United’s U18 coaching role.

The Red Devils have a few internal options to choose from for this role, but as of now Fletcher is leading the chase.

Phil Jones is another name that has been mentioned to CentreDevils; however, that is looking less likely.

This comes after ex-Manchester United U18 coach Adam Lawrence officially departed.

Lawrence has held a number of positions throughout the academy programme since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2021.

Prior to leading the U18s, responsibilities included serving as head of player development.

Last season, Lawrence led the U18 team to an unprecedented treble. a campaign that saw two victories over Manchester City, a local rival.

His team lost to Aston Villa on penalties in a thrilling FA Youth Cup semi-final this year.

Lawrence’s loss is detrimental to the youth side, and he has left big shoes to fill for the next man, whether it will be Fletcher or not.
