Former Newcastle United player Jonjo Shelvey is reportedly in talks to join his fifth club since leaving the Premier League side in 2023.
While PIF have been very focused on getting Eddie Howe the players he needs to fight further up the Premier League table, a lot of focus has also been on shifting players who are considered not good enough by the Newcastle United boss.
Few big names have left the club since Howe’s arrival in 2021; it is more the players who enjoyed a lot of minutes under Steve Bruce, but significantly less under Howe.
The likes of Jeff Hendrick and Isaac Hayden were ousted from Newcastle’s first-team squad almost immediately after Howe was appointed manager. While the latter still remains at the club, he has not played since 2021.
Elsewhere, the likes of Chris Wood have gone on to be successful away from Newcastle. The 33-year-old is coming off the back of a sensational season with Nottingham Forest, scoring 20 goals in the 2024/25 campaign.
Jonjo Shelvey followed Wood to Forest in January, but his career since then has been far less successful. It has now been reported that he is in talks over a move to his fifth club in two years.

Former Newcastle United man Jonjo Shelvey in talks to join Hull City
It has been a wild couple of years for Shelvey, who was not able to make much of an impact at Forest before he was placed on the transfer list at the start of the 2023/24 season.
He signed a permanent deal with Turkish Super Lig side Caykur Rizespor in September 2023, but only remained there for one season before signing for Eyupspor. Things did not go well for him there either, and he was released after just five months at the Super Lig side.

In January 2025, Shelvey signed a short-term deal with Burnley, playing two games to help them achieve promotion back to the Premier League. The midfielder did not have the biggest influence on Scott Parker’s side, but will take some credit for their rise out of the Championship.
Now, it has been reported on Alan Nixon’s Patreon that Shelvey is now in talks with Championship side Hull City. The 33-year-old will be eager to make an impact at the Tigers, who narrowly escaped relegation to League One last season.
The report states that Shelvey is looking for a new club on home turf, which Hull appear willing to provide for him. There has been a lot of change at the former Premier League side in the last couple of months. It was reported that former Newcastle midfielder Emre was linked with Hull’s manager role, but Sergej Jakirovic was eventually appointed.

Shelvey spent the majority of his career at Newcastle, where the likes of Rafa Benitez were able to get the best out of him in the Championship and Premier League.
The midfielder left Newcastle with the best wishes of everyone at the club and is still a big fan of the Magpies despite leaving over two years ago. In his first interview with Burnley, Shelvey said his family still live in Newcastle, showing how much he and his loved ones enjoyed the area.

While Shelvey leaves Burnley, James Trafford could soon follow him out. It has been confirmed that Trafford’s transfer to Newcastle is as good as done, so fans could see the shot-stopper who kept 29 clean sheets last season move to Tyneside after over a year of transfer speculation.
Nick Pope messaged Trafford on social media, saying he will see him soon. It looks like that statement will now come true.
