Widespread negotiations in NBA free agency won’t officially kick off until June 30, but teams have been able to speak to their own free agents since the day after the NBA Finals concluded.
The Miami Heat used this rule to their advantage and negotiated a new deal with a promising guard. According to a report on Saturday, guard Davion Mitchell plans to sign a contract with the Heat worth $24 million over two years.

Mitchell seemingly referenced his roots in the social media post, as he’s a native of Hinesville, Ga., and was born there back in September of 1998.
Miami made a move to acquire Mitchell prior to the February trade deadline when it traded forward P.J. Tucker along with a second-round pick and cash to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for the 26-year-old.
After the trade, Miami provided Mitchell with more playing time than he’d ever received at any point of his NBA career, and he took full advantage of the opportunities.
He averaged 10.3 points (helped by 44.7 percent shooting from 3-point range) as well as 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game across 30 regular-season contests with Miami, and he might just be a playoff riser considering how he stepped up his game in his first taste of playoff action as a member of the Heat.
Mitchell averaged 15.0 points and 6.3 assists per contest in Miami’s first-round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was red-hot from 3-point range throughout the best-of-seven series as well, considering he buried half of his 14 3s attempted.
Overall, he shot 61.0 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from deep in the series. His play was one of very few positive takeaways from a playoff series that ended in the Heat getting swept.
Hopefully, Mitchell has found a new NBA home in Miami and will be a crucial member of the team’s guard rotation for the foreseeable future. Heat fans should be ecstatic that the team is bringing him back at an affordable number, too, as there’s a real argument to be made that Mitchell will be underpaid.
