Chelsea have suffered a big blow to their future investment prospects, as one of their owners has shifted his priorities elsewhere.

BlueCo acquired the Blues in May 2022, with Todd Boehly holding a controlling stake in the club.

Over the last week, it has been revealed that one of the West London side’s other owners, Mark Walter, is set to become the main shareholder of the LA Lakers basketball team.

Walter reportedly owns a 13% stake in Chelsea, who have spent freely since being under the control of BlueCo, and often handed out lucrative long-term deals.

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Walter’s acquisition of the Lakers is bad news for Chelsea fans.

‘Walter has himself tied up now’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Walter’s focus will now be firmly on the Lakers, and therefore he won’t be making further investments into Chelsea.

The Blues are currently deciding whether or not to remain at Stamford Bridge, with Earl’s Court a potential location if a move is sanctioned.

Wyness added that the purchase of the Lakers is a massive gamble, which could take a lot of his attention away from the West London side.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “When that news broke about the Lakers, my friend in New York who’s very close to the investment market sent me an immediate message. We couldn’t believe it.

“Normally, the football clubs sell for a multiple of revenue. So you might be looking at sometimes three or four times the revenue of the club. This is between 20 and 24 times the revenue of the Lakers. It’s just phenomenal to think that ten or twelve billion dollars is what they’re going for.

“They’re only turning over probably about the same as Nottingham Forest or Everton, so to get that sort of valuation is just mind-blowing.

“Mark Walter, will he then invest in Chelsea more? I don’t think so. I think he’s got himself tied up now with the Lakers. So he’s going to have to keep a focus on that rather big investment.

“I think that’s really the point I’m trying to make. He’s made this massive gamble. Now he’s got to extract value out of that. Besides just owning the franchise, he’s got to make it work better.”

Chelsea to sign another striker

Meanwhile, Football Insider has exclusively revealed (24 June) that Chelsea are definitely expected to sign another forward this summer with Christopher Nkunku set to leave the club.

Nkunku has been linked with Man United in recent days and the Blues are ready to facilitate his exit in a move which would free up space for a new out-and-out striker.

Randal Kolo Muani, currently on loan at Juventus but still under contract at Paris Saint-Germain, has emerged as a concrete target for the Stamford Bridge club.
