Chelsea were able to keep 11 clean sheet in last season’s Premier League. Similarly, Manchester United were able to keep 10 clean sheets.
However, these two figures rank 7th and 9th on the table of clean sheets for the season.
Yes, the duty of keeping a clean sheet is a defence’s job but it is also largely down to the goalkeeper.
Due to both teams not ranking highly on this table, the duo have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer.
This comes in a time where both sides are looking to build on and improve on their 4th and 15th place finishes in the Premier League last season.
This can only be done through improving their squads. One goalkeeper that has been linked to both sides is FIFA World Cup winner Emi Martinez who plays for fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.
The Argentine was able to keep 9 clean sheets in a Villa side that finished 6th in the English top flight last season.
Furthermore, he was able to make 2.8 saves per match on average whilst also boasting an impressive 77% passing accuracy and 42.4% long ball accuracy.
These statistics, alongside the fact that Martinez is 32, make him an ideal target for both clubs.
However, now, it has been revealed by Mirror Sport that Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign the goalkeeper.
This is because Aston Villa are being forced to cash in on their number 1 to ease fears around failing the Premier League’s PSR test.
The goal stopper had previously expressed his interest in joining Manchester United and has been formally contacted by the Old Trafford outfit.
However, with this news now being revealed, the deal between United and Villa could be complicated or even prevented altogether.
