Chelsea are starting to get busy in the transfer market once again, and one of the players we’re now targeting is apparently Brighton & Hove Albion forward João Pedro, who was among the names linked with the club at the end of the season.
No player scored more Premier League goals for Brighton this past season than the 23-year-old, though that’s not saying much as he managed just ten (as did Kaoru Mitoma and even Danny Welbeck). Still, we all know how much we love shopping at The Seagulls. And, in fairness, both Moisés Caicedo and Marc Cucurella have turned out to be key players, and Levi Colwill gained valuable experience out there as well.
That said, it’s been Newcastle United who seem to have been pursuing the Brazil international the hardest, so the recent reports of Brighton rejecting bids “in excess of £50m” from two Premier League teams could be easily seen as them trying to drive up his transfer value by creating (a perhaps non-existent) bidding war. According to the BBC, they are looking for “at least £60m”.
It’s tough to see where João Pedro might fit in exactly, but he is a versatile enough player that he could be useful especially in a central attacking role. Not £60m-useful of course, but valuation has never been our strong suit in dealing with Brighton.
Understand that Brighton have rejected bids from two clubs - believed to be Newcastle and Chelsea - in excess of £50m for Joao Pedro. Talks are ongoing...
