Chelsea player ratings vs Benfica as Nkunku moment sums up Charlotte chaos

Chelsea are through to the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final after beating Benfica in the round of 16 in the most dramatic of circumstances.

The Blues will take on Palmeiras in the quarter-final after a 120 minutes that are really difficult to put into words. A two-hour delay due to adverse weather conditions threatened to end Chelsea's tournament. But they kept going.

It was a dominant first half in Charlotte for Chelsea, who were kept at bay by Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. However, the Ukrainian was caught out on 64 minutes when James struck a clever free-kick into the near post to give the Blues a well deserved lead at the Bank of America Stadium.

There was a stoppage in play in Charlotte because of a thunderstorm above the stadium - leaving the players frustrated. However, safety is the primary concern and the necessary measures were taken to keep everyone safe and well.

When the players did eventually come back out, Benfica, remarkably, scored a stoppage time equaliser. Angel Di Maria converted from the penalty spot after the referee overruled his initial decision when consulting the VAR monitor. The ball struck Malo Gusto's arm and the referee controversially pointed to the spot.

Extra-time followed and Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second yellow card - forcing Benfica down to 10 men for the majority of the 30 minutes. And Chelsea's man advantage told in Charlotte.

Christopher Nkunku put the Blues ahead before quick-fire goals from Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put the icing on the cake. Below, Bobby Vincent rates the Chelsea players that featured out of 10.

Robert Sanchez - 6

Back in goal after being rested against Esperance. Passed it out of play just before half-time. Claimed crosses well.

Reece James - 8

Also back after a rest. Scored the winning goal of the game. I'm not sure anyone else on the pitch could have scored that goal. A great, intelligent and crucial strike from the captain.

Benoit Badiashile - 5

A surprise inclusion. Won his aerial duels - as he so often does, but looked a bit shaky in possession. He pushes forward a lot and gets caught out, or at least close to. Came off injured in the second half.

Levi Colwill - 7

Colwill produced a fine tackle to stop Vangelis Pavlidis in his tracks early on. Thought he was really solid.

Marc Cucurella - 6

Cucurella was overlapping - something we have not seen too much of under Enzo Maresca. Had two glorious first-half chances; one headed off the line and the other well saved by Anatoliy Trubin.

Moises Caicedo - 9

A well earned break against Esperance but Caicedo returned to the XI this evening. Bossed the midfield alongside Romeo Lavia. Will be missed against Palmeiras after picking up a second booking.

He made the winning goal. Caicedo ran the length of the pitch to provide an overlapping option and his shot was not dealt with by Trubin, allowing Nkunku to score the winner.

Romeo Lavia - 8

The link-up between Lavia and Caicedo was particularly pleasing to watch. An aggressive performance from the Belgian midfielder. Should have had an assist for Cucurella on 38 minutes.

Pedro Neto - 7

The Portuguese winger looked bright from the start - summing up his tournament so far. Always a threat for the Blues on the right, though he seemed to be even wider than usual. Did get another goal, though, and it was a great finish.

Enzo Fernandez - 6

Fernandez was everywhere. He constantly provided an option for Neto on the right-hand side. Subbed off in the second-half.

Cole Palmer - 7

Started on the left wing. An unusual position for Chelsea's No.10 but one he seemed to fit in seamlessly in the early stages. Had a couple of early shots on goal. Plays the assist for Dewsbury-Hall.

Liam Delap - 5

His off-the-ball movement is brilliant. Delap is constantly looking to make a run in behind the last defender. However, his hold-up play was not as good today.

Tosin Adarabioyo (on for Badiashile 70') - 6

Did well to stop Di Maria counter-attacking in extra-time.

Christopher Nkunku (on for Delap 79') - 7

What a moment for Nkunku. Whether he goes or not this summer, he will remember that for a long time to come! Some finish as well.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (on for Fernandez 79') - 7

Great moment for him to score Chelsea's fourth. Fine finish.

Malo Gusto (on for James 79') - 5

Handballs for the penalty but I think it is so, so harsh.

Trevoh Chalobah (on for Lavia 86') - 5

Came on for the restart and played more than he would have hoped due to the game going to extra-time.

Aaron Anselmino (on for Colwill 118') - N/A

Some minutes for his Chelsea debut.
