Contract agreement close for £75m Premier League star once linked with Newcastle United

Newcastle United were linked with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite last year.

Everton are reportedly closing in on a lucrative deal to tie down star defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Newcastle United kept tabs on the 23-year-old a year ago when his future remained uncertain. At the time, the Toffees were in limbo as they battled relegation under Sean Dyche.

Everton have endured turbulent times in recent years, with Premier League points deductions and several relegation battles. Reappointing David Moyes last season has brought a sense of stability to the Blues with exciting times ahead in their new stadium.

Jarrad Branthaite’s hefty price tag

Despite having just broken into the Everton ranks, potential suitors were quoted a staggering £75million for Branthwaite. This made him unattainable for Newcastle given their PSR situation 12 months ago.

Toon chiefs swiftly moved on and pursued Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to little avail instead. The Eagles demanded a similar fee - labelled "superstar money” by chairman Steve Parish - as the Magpies kept their powder dry.

Newcastle are actively looking for a centre-back this summer as a long-term successor to Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. Both players are entering the twilight of their careers, with Sven Botman also suffering several injury problems in recent times.

Everton close to new contract

However, it appears unlikely that Branthwaite will be on the move as he negotiates a fresh deal. NewcastleWorld have received no word on the England international being a target, although they retain an arm’s length interest in Guehi.

The Athletic report that discussions are ongoing between Everton and Branthwaite. He is already tied down until 2027 - with the option of an extra year - but a fresh deal would keep rival clubs at bay.

David Moyes on Jarrad Branthwaite future

Moyes insisted Everton hold all the cards when facing the media about Branthwaite earlier this year. He told reporters: “Good players will always be linked with moves away, especially good young players. But you have to remember Jarrad’s got a three-year contract left, he’s got two years and a year’s option so if anything Everton hold all the cards regarding that player.

“But I have to also say over the journey I’ve had over many years at Everton we’ve had to sell different players from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. Apart from being a football manager, especially at certain clubs you have to sell on the journey to try and build as well. But I wouldn’t think that Jarrad is one of the players I would want to lose, that’s for sure.”
