Sales need to be made this summer
Manchester United will consider offers for any player this summer, but it would take a huge bid for them to part with the likes of Amad and Bruno Fernandes.
The same cannot be said of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho, with the club hoping to move all four players on this summer.
The performance levels alone of Rashford, Antony and Sancho make their likely sales understandable. Antony and Sancho have never threatened to reach the heights expected of them at Old Trafford, while Rashford has been far too inconsistent in recent years. But Garnacho's situation is slightly different.
While the 20-year-old is still raw and can be inconsistent, that's to be expected given his age. He is one of the few players in the squad capable of producing something out of nothing, and so United's willingness to move him on this summer has seemingly come about purely because of his attitude problems.
It's a statement of intent from Amorim. Garnacho's outburst following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham shouldn't be tolerated, and his show of support for the exiled Rashford on social media last week wasn't a good look.
There is absolutely no doubt about Garnacho's talent, and he's only going to get better as he develops. But, as Roy Keane said in his ridiculous criticism of Bruno Fernandes earlier this season, "talent is not enough".
Keane was wrong to criticise Fernandes but he was right to say that talent isn't enough to represent a club like Manchester United. Amorim needs a group of players with the right attitude and weeding out those who he doesn't believe have the attitude and professionalism needed to take United back to where they want to be is the first step on the road to recovery for United.
If Garnacho is sold and he goes on to thrive elsewhere, there will no doubt be plenty of rival fans ready to point out what a massive mistake United made. But that's not the point.
Amorim is well aware of Garnacho's talent, but the United head coach needs to lay down a marker and let players know what is expected of them if they're to represent a club of United's stature.
Selling Garnacho might not be a popular decision among some United supporters, but it's absolutely the right decision if Amorim is to get this group of players to where he wants them to be.
