Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been backed in the summer transfer window so far as the Reds look to retain their Premier League title in the 2025/26 season. The Reds have spent more than £200 million so far this summer, and still have over a month of the window remaining.
Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz have been the three big-money signings. The club have also added goalkeepers Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman to their squad.
It however seems that Liverpool are not done there, with the club continuing to be linked with incoming transfers. One of those is Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old has been one of the most dangerous strikers in the Premier League since his arrival in 2022. In the 2024/25 campaign, he scored 23 goals in 34 appearances in the Premier League, helping Newcastle to qualify for the Champions League.
The Magpies will therefore be determined to keep hold of him beyond this summer. Here’s the latest on Liverpool’s interest in the striker and a possible move.
Transfer domino
Liverpool may be keeping a close eye on the transfer activity at Newcastle United with a potential transfer domino in place. The Magpies are after a forward in the summer transfer window, with Brighton’s Joao Pedro seemingly the top target.
Reports say that Newcastle are in advanced talks over a potential move for the forward. They have seen one £50 million bid rejected with the Seagulls reportedly holding our for a fee closer to £60 million.
There is said to be optimism that a deal can be done. A £60 million outlay, for a player who would provide competition to Isak could potentially lead to Newcastle even starting to consider a sale of the Sweden international, something that could spring Liverpool into action.
‘Quiet talks’ as Newcastle take step
Newcastle have been holding ‘quiet talks’ with Isak behind the scenes and are relaxed about the player’s situation, according to our sister site ChronicleLive.
The report adds that the club don’t have to sell the player and that there are no fears internally that Isak will push for a move away from the club this summer. They are said to be in no position to sell and will not be pressured by interested clubs.
Eddie Howe is also expected to be a big part of negotiations with the player over a new contract at St James’ Park.
Reports elsewhere state that the club will be looking for a fee of at least £150 million if they were to sell this summer.
Waiting game
Liverpool are ready to play the waiting game over a move for Isak this summer. As reported by the Echo, the Reds continue to keep a watchful eye on developments at St James Park.
But any move is likely to come after the reset of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR). That comes at the start of July.
Any transfer completed after June 30 will go onto the club accounts for the 2025/26 period instead of the current 2024/25 accounting period. It would therefore mean that any deal for Isak would be on separate accounts to the £116 million move for Florian Wirtz earlier in the summer.
