West Ham have emerged as a potential candidate to sign Saint-Etienne striker Lucas Stassin.

The 20-year-old notched 12 goals and four assists for the Ligue 1 side last season, but he was unable to prevent them from slipping to relegation back to the second tier.

He has been outlined as a potential option to solve West Ham’s attacking woes next season, but Graham Potter’s side are facing fierce competition from numerous European sides to get a deal over the line.

West Ham have denied being in advanced talks for Stassin

Potter desperately needs to add a new frontman to his squad for next term.

Michail Antonio’s future remains in doubt, while it has already been confirmed that Danny Ings will be departing E20. The signing of Nicolas Fullkrug also hasn’t worked out so far, which surely means a striker must be towards the top of the Hammers’ list of priorities.

It has previously been suggested that West Ham were in advanced talks to sign Stassin, but it has now been revealed that no such talks have taken place over the Belgian.

The Hammers are understood to have denied that they are in advanced talks over a deal for Stassin, according to ExWHUEmployee via The West Ham Way (28 June).

The insider has added that the club have acknowledged their interest in the Belgian, but are denying suggestions that they might be nearing an agreement to sign him.

West Ham need to add more than one striker

The attacking issues at the London Stadium have been eased somewhat in recent seasons by Jarrod Bowen’s ability to play through the middle on occasion, but they can’t continue to keep relying on him alone to provide a goal threat if they want to progress.

Fullkrug, Ings and Evan Ferguson notched just five Premier League goals between them last season, which once again how poor the Hammers’ recruitment has been at the top of the pitch.

With Ferguson heading back to Brighton, Ings leaving, and Michail Antonio potentially departing as well, Potter needs multiple new strikers this summer, regardless of how their Stassin chase pans out.

Season Club Apps Goals Assists

2024/25 Saint-Etienne (Westerlo) 29 (5) 12 (2) 4 (3)

2023/24 Westerlo 27 9 2

2022/23 Anderlecht 5 – –

Stassin’s stats from the last three seasons.

The Belgian’s relative inexperience in the top European leagues should be another cause for concern. He clearly has a bright future, but it would be unwise of the club to line him up as their main striker target this summer.

Therefore, if the Hammers want to progress up the table next term, it’s crucial they work towards bringing in another option as well.
