Manchester United could be about to receive a welcomed transfer windfall thanks to the future of Alvaro Carreras that could contribute to Ruben Amorim's transfer plans.

United have already spent £62.5million to bring in Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are keen to add Bryan Mbeumo for a similar price. Another four signings could still be made at Old Trafford but technical director Jason Wilcox must raise funds through player sales.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho have all been strongly tipped to leave this summer but neither have come close from bringing a fee in.

Fortunately, United's transfer business could be complemented by the transfer of Carreras. Despite many questioning the club's decision to let the left-back leave, United are set to bank a fee for his impressive spell at Benfica.

Carreras joined the Portuguese giants last summer for just £5m after a brief loan spell. Carreras has since developed into one of the most-exciting wing-backs in Europe with Real Madrid linked.

The left-back has a release clause of £42m and Los Blancos are expected to trigger that this summer. United are said to have inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause in his contract with some reports even suggesting that they own 40-50 per cent of his future sale.

If Madrid do sign him for £42m, United would receive between £16.8m-£20m. If the actual sell-on clause is closer to the 20 per cent mark, United would then bank around £7.4m.

Now, a move could accelerate at the perfect time for United after Benfica crashed out of the Club World Cup. After beating Bayern Munich earlier this week, Bruno Lage's men lost 4-1 to Chelsea after extra-time on Saturday meaning Carreras is now set to decide on his future.
