Cowboys Depth Chart: Who steps up at quarterback if Dak Prescott misses time?

The Dallas Cowboys are less than a month away from departing for Oxnard, Calif., for training camp, as the Brian Schottenheimer era approaches its official beginning on July 21.

In the Cowboys Depth Chart series, we will take a look at each position group to determine which players are safe, on the bubble or have work to do in terms of making the 53-man roster coming out of training camp in late August.

At the quarterback position, it should be pretty straight-forward in projecting the depth chart, but a preseason wild card could be thrown in like it was in 2016 and in 2023.

Here is a look at the quarterback position heading into training camp.

SAFE (2)

Dak Prescott, Joe Milton III

No player on the roster is safer than Dak Prescott after he signed a four-year, $240 million extension in 2024 that officially begins this season. After missing the second-half of the season due to a hamstring avulsion, Prescott was a full participant in the team’s offseason program and is expected to carry those responsibilities into training camp. Whether he plays in the preseason or not will be up to Schottenheimer to decide in his first year making that decision.

After losing Cooper Rush to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency, the Cowboys quickly made a move to acquire Joe Milton III in a trade with the New England Patriots to solidify the backup quarterback spot moving forward. Milton, 25, has drawn rave reviews early on for his approach to his new team and is prepared to be the first called into action if Prescott goes down with another injury.

ON THE BUBBLE (1)

Will Grier

Two questions will surround Will Grier at training camp. Will Schottenheimer carry three quarterbacks on the roster? Will he perform well enough for the front office to ride with him unlike how they did in 2023?

With the “QB3 rule” that went into effect in 2024, teams can make a third quarterback inactive on game day but still call upon his services if both quarterbacks in front of him get hurt. For that to be the case, however, he would need to be on the 53-man roster or called up for one of three practice squad elevations for the season.

With the youth and fresh health of Milton, a case could be made to leave Grier on the practice squad in 2025.

And while he will get time in the preseason to showcase his skills, can he do enough for the front office not to bring in another quarterback to push him out like the team did in 2023 when Trey Lance was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers?
