Aston Villa are set to breach the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and “have to do something” as the accounting deadline approaches.
The West Midlands giants have faced PSR issues over the past couple of years after spending close to the allowable losses limit, with Premier League clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
Football Insider revealed on 5 June Villa are one of multiple clubs considering selling stakes in their women’s team to improve their PSR situations.
The Premier League was looking to hold a vote to prevent clubs from selling assets to sister companies at the annual meeting of the 20 top-flight sides earlier this month.
However, the proposal didn’t even go to a vote after it became clear there wasn’t enough support for the motion to pass.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Villa are now likely to sell their women’s team ahead of the 30 June accounting deadline.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for 2023-24.
Villa posted a club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their turnover increased from £217.7million in 2022-23 to £275.7million, while their losses fell from £119.6million to £85.4million.

Aston Villa could have to sell star player
Borson insisted Villa would likely have to sell one of their star players to generate the profit needed to resolve their PSR situation.
He told Football Insider: “I think they’re pretty close and will have breached, all things being equal, so I think they’ve got to do something.
“I guess that looks most likely to be the women’s team, which there’s quite a lot of noise about.
“Why wouldn’t you do it if you had a choice between selling probably a player that you quite like given that you’re trying to generate let’s say £10million, £20million or even £30million of profit.
“That would have to be a player that’s in pretty good shape, so you’re talking about a player to get that sort of value that’s either a very promising young player or two, and young player as in somebody with no book value, so somebody that’s from the youth team.
“Or alternatively, one of your big stars who’s been with you for a while and that still has value above their written down value because they’ve been at the club for a certain amount of time, so somebody like Watkins would fit into that category.
“But it seems very unlikely that you would choose to sell one of those players rather than doing a Chelsea-style internal transfer of the women’s team.”

Leeds make contact to sign Aston Villa star
In terms of a potential exit, Spanish left-back Alex Moreno is expected to leave Villa Park this summer.
Football Insider revealed on 18 June Leeds United have made contact over a deal for Moreno.
The 32-year-old, who joined Unai Emery’s side from Real Betis in January 2023, spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Nottingham Forest.
